BUILDING ARIZONA FAMILIES DOMESTIC ADOPTION AUGUST NEWSLETTER

Building Arizona Families

From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, MSW

Dear Friend,

I hope you and yours are doing well – that everyone is healthy and safe.  I’m sure you have had your challenges these last six months!  I can tell you for myself that I’m grateful my family is all safe and well, but this has been one of the craziest times I can remember since I have worked in the adoption field!   The worst heat wave in 50 years, COVID-19, and violence on our streets –

IT’S LIKE A TRIPLE TSUNAMI FOR HOMELESS PREGNANT WOMEN – WHERE CAN THEY BE SAFE?

I have had a hard time managing the triple digit weather in Phoenix, where we have had a few days as hot at 117!  I simply can’t imagine how brutal this heat is on a pregnant homeless woman.  Not to mention the unrest in the streets across our country where homeless pregnant women are trying to stay safe.  And even if she is fortunate enough to be accepted into a homeless shelter, the risks for contracting COVID-19 increase due to crowded conditions and the challenges that exist to keep shared bathrooms, showers, cafeteria style food, etc. sanitized.  Plus many shelters require their residents to leave during the day and return at night, so who knows what the exposures are for everyone staying in the shelter.

Can you help us reach out to these vulnerable women in crisis carrying precious unborn babies?  It costs us about $107.14 to connect with one pregnant woman in crisis who can’t care for herself and her baby, and wants to give her child the courageous gift of adoption.   We can’t help every pregnant woman in crisis, but we can help as many as possible with your generous support.  You are not only helping the pregnant woman, but you are playing a vital role in saving an unborn baby’s life and making sure that precious baby is born safe and healthy.  Please be as generous as you can – lives depend upon it!

While there is a great deal changing all around us, my commitment to helping save the lives of unborn babies through adoption will never change. If you know anyone who is considering adopting a newborn, or a women experiencing a crisis pregnancy, please forward this newsletter to them, and give them our contact information.  Women facing crisis pregnancies need a positive option that gives life and a future to their baby.  Please share my personal cell number.  I am available 24/7/365 to help pregnant women in crisis.  My cell is 623.695.4112.  Women can text or call me.

Thank you for your generosity that helps save the lives of unborn babies.

BIRTH MOTHER ADOPTION STORIES

MEET LIZ

Adoption

Liz had just entered rehab for her drug addiction when she discovered she was pregnant.  She already had a one year old daughter. Trying to get her life back on track again, stay focused on her sobriety, and be a good mother to her daughter, Liz believed adoption would be the best choice. After praying for the right people to come into her life, she called an old babysitter and discovered they were looking to adopt again. Liz knew her prayers were answered and Building Arizona Family was able to help Liz on her adoption journey.

We are so grateful that Liz chose life for her baby.  Someday, Liz’s baby will look back, grateful for the gift of life and the stable future that Liz provided through her courageous adoption choice.  Watch Liz’s story HERE.

Liz and her baby are just one more reason why you can know for certainty that your support saves and changes lives!

Just think – $107.14 might be all it takes to give a vulnerable baby the same miraculous gift that Liz’s baby received.

The need is so great.  We can’t give in to being overwhelmed.  Together, we can save one baby’s life at a time, and provide the resources a desperate pregnant woman needs to start a new, bright future.

Thank you – you are changing so many lives and we can’t do this without you.

CONFESSIONS OF AN ADOPTION AGENCY DIRECTOR

Adoption

Here is the raw, the real and the behind the curtain information.  I have no inhibitions about discussing these issues that we are about to dive into; everything we do- we do transparently.

 Is Domestic Adoption Risky?

Yes, in can be.  Just as infertility may be risky or a traditional pregnancy.  Risk is an all-encompassing word and there are varying degrees.  Some adoptions may appear less risky or more risky at various stages of the adoption journey.

Some adoptions may start out as a lower type risk adoption, but circumstances in the birth parent’s lives may change, which in turn may make their adoption plan less stable.  Examples may be: their financial situation may change in a positive direction, family members may take issue with their adoption choice, or maybe they may not form a connection with their adoptive family- as they had expected.

BUILDING ARIZONA FAMILIES DOMESTIC ADOPTION JULY NEWSLETTER

Building Arizona Families

From the Desk of Kelly Rourke-Scarry, MSW

Dear Friend,

In all of the years I have been working with women experiencing crisis pregnancies, one thing never ceases to just absolutely floor me.  It’s hard to describe unless you have witnessed it yourself, because it is just too easy to write off a pregnant woman in a tough situation.  “She brought it on herself”, “She’s just another addict,” or “I don’t feel sorry for her, she needs to get her act together”.  There are many other judgments directed at pregnant women in crisis, but there are some common facts that I can share with you.  These women, despite their circumstances, are human beings with deep emotions.  Pregnancy shakes every woman to the core of her being. As life grows inside of her, so does love. Motherly instinct takes over and the desire to protect, to nurture, and to love changes women.

So, back to the one thing that never ceases to amaze me.  It’s selflessness.  Despite carrying her baby for nine months and growing to love this unseen child, then experiencing the pain of labor that is quickly replaced with the joy of a new life, many of these courageous women make the most painful, selfless decision of their lives.  They choose what is best for their baby, despite what their heart tells them.   This beautiful quote expresses it better than I ever could…

A birth mother always puts the needs of her child above the wants of her heart..

I think courage in the face of pain and selflessness birthed out of love needs to be celebrated.

This month we celebrate the courageous women who chose their baby’s future above their personal desires.  I believe these women have earned the right to a fresh start in life, don’t you?

I’m grateful for the courage and selflessness of my own birth mother.  At sixteen, she could easily have made a different choice, and then I would not be writing to you today.  After reuniting with her as an adult, I learned about her love for me and her desire that I have the bright future that she was unable to give me.  As a result of her selflessness, I have been blessed by a wonderful adoptive family, and given opportunities and experiences I would never have had if it wasn’t for her selflessness.

It’s precisely why I launched the Donna K. Evans Foundation – to provide hope and a future for women in crisis who have been selfless enough to put the needs of their baby above the wants of their hearts.  After a woman gives birth and cradles her baby in her arms, she places her tiny infant in the arms of the adoptive family.  When the adoptive family leaves filled with the joy of their new baby, the birth mother is left with empty arms and an aching heart.

The Donna K. Evans Foundation embraces these selfless birth mothers, providing post adoptive counseling and emotional support. We also provide food, clothing, education and training, and much more.

Can you help us provide a fresh start  and bright future for these selfless women?

The need is so great.

MEET RACHEL

Adoption

Rachel was homeless. She was a heroin addict.  Rachel had also already had an abortion.

“I had an abortion previously.   I didn’t know I had a choice.  I didn’t know I could choose life for my baby.”

Rachel talks about her baby boy, and the future he has now with his adoptive family.  She also talks about the future she has with the support of Building Arizona Families and the Donna K. Evans Foundation.

What Rachel said is so powerful – “I didn’t know I had a choice”!   There are so many women like Rachel, facing a crisis pregnancy and believing their only option is an abortion. We have to reach them.  We have to tell them about the beautiful option of adoption.  Adoption gives the gift of life.  It gives a family the cherished gift of a baby.  And it gives the birth mother a chance to start life all over, with the support she needs to succeed.

We are so grateful that Rachel chose life for her baby.  Rachel’s baby boy will look back some day at the selfless decision his birth mother made, and be so grateful that she chose life for him. Watch Rachel’s story HERE.

This is exactly why we need to connect with women experiencing crisis pregnancies.
Just think – $107.14 might be all it takes to give a vulnerable baby
the same miraculous gift that Rachel’s baby received.

We need your help to save the lives of precious unborn babies.  We need your help to provide a selfless birth mother the gift of a bright future.  It is the hope she clings to when she places her baby into the arms of another woman that her baby will know as “Mom”.   Please give as generously as you can to help us reach as many pregnant women crisis as we can, and provide the beautiful, life giving miracle of adoption, a new life and a new family.

Thank you – you are changing so many lives and we can’t do this without you.

Kelly Rourke-Scarry Talks to KTAR About Recent Adoption Scandal in the Valley

Building Arizona Families is dedicated to the integrity of the adoption process and committed to the protection and best interests of every vulnerable child, birth mother, and loving adoptive family.  The recent news story about Maricopa County Assessor, Paul Peterson, and his alleged adoption fraud scheme should not cause adoptive parent’s uneasiness.  There are too many precious children that need loving forever families.  There are numerous criteria that families should make sure adoption agencies and adoption attorneys meet prior to entrusting them with their adoption journey.

As Arizona’s largest adoption agency, we have been serving families, birth mothers, and children from around the United States.  Our adoption agency undergoes annual scrutiny on numerous levels to retain our certifications.  We are a non-profit, state-licensed and internationally Hague accredited adoption agency. Building Arizona Families personally understands the adoption process, as many of our staff have been adopted or adopted children. We put caring for children, forever families, and birth mothers at the core of everything we do, providing them with the utmost compassion and professional excellence.

Kelly Rourke-Scarry, co-founder, President, and CEO of Building Arizona Families, understands the concerns raised by the recent Paul Petersen scandal. Kelly Rourke-Scarry joins KTAR to talk about the concerns and how adoptive parents can protect themselves in the adoption process. Listen to KTAR’s interview with Kelly below and read KTAR’s breaking news story of Paul Peterson HERE.

Three Sets of Victims and What to do Next

PAUL PETERSEN’S PROMISES OF A BETTER LIFE

Pregnant women from the Marshall Islands were treated like property. Often these women did not even have a bed to sleep on, and many were paid off on the day of birth to give their babies away.

ADOPTIVE FAMILIES AND NEWBORN BABIES

Adoptive families were promised legal adoptions of babies from the Marshall Islands. Luckily, for the time being, it appears that Marshall Islands adoptions facilitated by Paul Petersen will not be overturned.

Let’s hope not. And then there is the baby.  If their mother had not been paid handsomely to give them away at birth, would they have been given up for adoption?

HOW TO PROTECT ARIZONA FAMILIES

According to Kelly Rourke-Scarry, M.Ed., co-founder, President and CEO of Building Arizona Families, Arizona’s largest adoption agency, there are key criteria adoptive families should investigate before adopting.

The most important criteria for international adoption is Hague accreditation. In the United States, international adoptions should be processed through a Hague accredited adoption agency to prevent abduction, sale, and trafficking of children. This is a rigorous accreditation process to protect the integrity of the adoption process.

Arizona adoption agencies should also state licensed.  They should be transparent about all adoption costs.  Relationships between birth mothers and adoptive families should be mutually agreed upon.  An adoption caseworker should be present to ensure that the best interests of the baby are protected at all costs.

About Kelly Rourke-Scarry, M.Ed., President & CEO of Building Arizona Families

Kelly Rourke-Scarry was adopted.  She is passionate about making sure that adoptions are in the best interest of the three parties involved in an adoption.  Mrs. Rourke-Scarry is available for interviews to discuss best practices to protect birth mothers, newborn babies, and Arizona’s adoptive families.  Mrs. Rourke-Scarry also hosts a podcast called “Birth Mother Matters” to educate society regarding adoption issues.

alternatives to abortion

The Disturbing Question, Part 1 – The Role of Finances in Abortion

Abortion in the U.S. by the Numbers

According to the CDC’s report, in 2015 there were 188 abortions for every 1,000 live births in the U.S. For that same year, 638,169 reported abortions were performed. In contrast, the CDC reports that less than 1% of U.S. women ages 18-44 have adopted a child.

Adoption in the U.S. by the Numbers

The National Council for Adoption’s 2017 report states that approximately 18,000 U.S. infants are adopted each year. 638,169 abortions and 18,000 newborn adoptions – the contrast in choice is staggering.

The Disturbing Abortion Question

Why do so many women with an unwanted pregnancy choose abortion and so few consider giving their baby the gift of life through adoption? It’s a disturbing question and the answer to it is complex. This article is one in a series that seeks to uncover the reasons why the majority of women with unwanted pregnancies choose abortion.

Cost and Motive

Consider this scenario: during Planned Parenthood’s 2017-2018 fiscal year, Planned Parenthood reported performed 332,757 abortions. Contrast that number with 2,831 adoption referrals they made – or 1 adoption referral for every 117 abortions performed. Why?

Research from the Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood) illustrates that 73% of women choosing abortion cited the inability to financially provide for a baby. How many women choosing abortion because of financial reasons are unaware that adoption services are free for women who choose adoption for their unborn child? Additionally, do they know that living expenses including food, clothing, housing, transportation, a cell phone, medical care, and counseling is all free of charge for the birth mother who chooses adoption.

Planned Parenthood’s website states that the cost of an abortion at a health center ranges from $350 to $950 for an abortion in the first trimester, and that cost is higher for a second trimester abortion. At an average cost of $500, and 332,757 abortions, Planned Parenthood brought in $166,378,500.00 from performing abortions last fiscal year. The data leaves one to wonder why, more of the 73% of women seeking abortion for financial reasons are not referred to an adoption agency, or why there is only 1 referral for every 117 abortions.

You Before Me

If 73% of women choose abortion for financial reasons, educating women about the financial and practical help they will receive through pregnancy and adoption could very possibly change a woman’s choice from abortion to adoption. This is the reason the You Before Me Movement has begun – to educate women with unwanted pregnancies about the opportunity have a true choice between abortion and adoption, unhindered by the financial component that can make women feel trapped.  Watch the stories of real women who experienced a crisis pregnancy HERE.

We invite you to join us in educating women in crisis circumstances about the support and help available to them. Women have the right to know that they can choose life for their unborn child even if they are unable to afford to parent. Join the conversation on Facebook HERE. You Before Me logo

The Other Right to Choose

When pregnant women are in crisis, many believe their only choice is to abort their child. The recent “You Know Me” campaign cites 25% of U.S. women as having had an abortion. It is important to note that research indicates at least one quarter of those women believe their abortion did more harm than good, and the majority of women who chose abortion have elevated trauma scores. In light of this sobering reality, The You Before Me movement has just launched to educate women who are unable to parent about the opportunity to choose life through adoption.

In 2014, approximately one million abortions were performed in the U.S., compared to only 18,000 children under the age of 2 being placed with adoption agencies (CDC). Education about available support services for pregnant women in crisis, and information on positive adoption process changes can impact the declining adoption trend reported by the Centers for Disease Control.

The movement’s founder, Kelly Rourke-Scarry, MSW, was adopted at birth. She is profoundly grateful for her life opportunities. Kelly is the co-founder of an adoption agency, Building Arizona Families. It is Arizona’s largest domestic adoption agency providing the emergency resources women with crisis pregnancies need in order to choose life for their baby.  She and her husband Adam have also founded the Donna K. Evans Foundation to serve birth mothers after adoption. The foundation helps provide necessary resources for women to go back to school, find a job, and fulfill their life dreams.  According to Kelly Rourke-Scarry:

“It’s time that we as a state and as a nation celebrate a woman’s right to choose adoption.  It’s time we fight to give women the necessary resources so that they have a choice.  We are committed to helping make that choice possible.  The You Before Me movement celebrates with the courageous women who choose life for their child through adoption.”

Today, many Arizona women who were once addicted, homeless, in abusive relationships, under age, etc. are proud of their choice to put their baby’s life first. Adoption is a positive choice for everyone – the baby, the birth mother, and the adoptive family. It changes lives and futures. It is the positive choice for women who believed they had no choice.
